Surgery: Assignment#3

These are the five antibiotics that I would choose to be part of the hospital practice. I tried to choose antibiotic based on their coverage spectrum in order to serve broad range of patients.

  1. Ceftriaxone– provides great support against gram negative bacteria so I can use this antibiotic on patient who needs gram negative coverage and differ the use of Zosyn. Also, ceftriaxone has high potency, wide spectrum of activity, and low risk of toxicity which makes the antibiotic favorable. It can be used to treat bacterial infections including pneumonia, bone infections, abdominal infections, Skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections
  2. Zosyn (Piperacillin-tazobactam)- this antibiotic is a broad-spectrum that provides coverage against gram negative, gram positive, pseudomonal and anaerobic In the hospital, if patient does not improve on Ceftriaxone then I would need a broad-spectrum antibiotic and Zosyn is an effective choice.
  3. Cephalexin– I would choose this antibiotic to cover for susceptible gram-positive Cephalexin also have wide spectrum of activity as it can be prescribed for Bladder Infection, Bacterial Infection, Bacterial Endocarditis Prevention, Bone infection, Kidney Infections, Otitis Media, Pharyngitis, Prostatitis, Skin or Soft Tissue Infection, Upper Respiratory Tract Infection.
  4. Vancomycin– According to the CDC, two in every 100 people carry MRSA that means I would encounter a patient with MRSA infection; therefore, I want to keep vancomycin part of the supply to serve those who needs this antibiotic.
  5. Metronidazole (flagyl)- this antibiotic can provide anaerobic coverage in GI and pelvic infections. Also, it is safe to use during pregnancy, which provides an edge to serving a specific group of patients.
